So Aston Villa then – it’s a little tough sometimes to define a programme as “great”, but in my ignorance I’d ranked Coventry (71/72), Bristol City (Late 70s) and the Stoke City Clipper (every single time) as my favourite programmes. However, Aston Villa in the early 1970s is making a big pitch for the big time.

Villa’s offerings have a grim yet stoic charm – somehow showcasing big time ambitions to get back to Division 1 with some of the most 1970s photos that ever been taken. I mean LOOK at that cover. It’s grim, charming, charmless, creepy and bizarre all in one go, and it’s just tip of the iceberg…

If you were wondering, the woman on the cover is Elsie (somehow we all knew she’d be called Elsie) who met a bunch of Villa fans, and they took to her, to the point where they had a whip round for her that raised…4 pounds.

Meanwhile, the sun set on Empire as Ian Ross and Tony Glynne went out on safari, while goalkeeper Jimmy Cumbes reflects on getting shot with an air pistol during a friendly…

The true measure of this programme though? The meeting of the Lions Club – a mix of bold supporter ambition and excitement as a new club forms with some truly Indoor League looking people. THAT is why Villa 72/73 is great…every page is a strange melting pot of bold dreams, and odd Midlanders who don’t care what they look like.

So Aston Villa, take your place in the great programme hall of fame. We might even have a whipround for you…
